The northerly wind had stayed on their back all afternoon, and every crew member aboard Pirate Treasure had his eyes trained on the horizon for their first sighting of their destination and the end of the race; Lord Howe Island.

It hadn’t been an easy journey. They had hit a southerly buster not far from the mainland, which slowed the entire fleet of thirty odd yachts, and sent several limping back to shore with their sails in tatters. For the past two days, however, it had been easy sailing, but the ten men aboard were looking forward to refreshing showers and dry land.

With his hands firmly on the wheel, Dean too was watching out for the island. Trying for a winning position hadn’t been the only reason for pushing his fourteen metre Wayworld 45 so hard. Now a few years old, he knew her capabilities. Getting a good placing in this race was one of them. His stomach already churned in anticipation of the other; meeting a child which in all likelihood could be his.

After his distressing last day at work, the ocean was the only place Dean wanted to be. He still cringed when he thought about the embarrassing and potentially lethal situation he’d blundered into.

It was rare for Dean to leave the office before five, but he was due for an early start the following morning, and he wanted to finish getting things ready for the race while it was still light.

After knocking on the door of Evelyn’s office, he entered, prepared to drop off his instructions and leave again. Unfortunately she was sitting there behind the desk deep in a phone conversation. The moment she saw him, she brusquely terminated the call.

“Just the person I want to see,” she smiled, slipping out of the chair. Coming around the desk she stopped in front of him.

Dropping the folder onto her desk, he said, “All of last month’s sales figures are here, and the manual for the program that...”

She placed her palms against his shirt.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing? he growled at her, taking a step backwards.

“Merely giving you something to remember me by while you’re all alone out there on the ocean,” she murmured, pressing her body to his. Slipping her arms around his neck, she pulled his head down to her level, and kissed him. He should have seen it coming, but at that point in time he was so stunned by her audacity he let her cling to him, her moist lips moving against his own.

“For God’s sake! You’re married to David. Remember him?” he grated harshly, forcing her roughly away form him. If the desk hadn’t been behind her, she would have stumbled and fallen.

“Not for much longer,” she replied, steadying herself.

Dean watched her breasts heave as she took a deep breath. But she left him cold. It was like being kissed by an icicle. How could David desire such a woman?

“Soon it will be just you and me, Dean. You and me, running Priceless Gemstones together.
